Bombay Bicycle Club

13 05 2009

The four Londoners of Bombay Bicycle Club graduated high school just last June, but don’t let that fool you. Already quite prolific for their years (2 EPs, 2 singles, and an LP on the way) the band delivers a mature sound with charmingly timorous vocals and perfect indie-rock melodies. No surprise that Island Records scooped them up late last year. Jim Abbiss (who’s worked with Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian) produced their debut album I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose which drops on July 6, with second single “Dust on the Ground” to be released June 22. First single “Always Like This” is summer yearning put to music and it’s oh-so-catchy, with a fantastic remix by James Rutledge that ups the electro ante.

Damn, I wish I was your cover

22 04 2009

Here’s my first of many ‘covers that are better than the original’ posts. And by ‘better’, I really just mean that I like it better, because objective reasoning is beyond my pay grade here.

First up is the Bat for Lashes/Fionn Regan/Maps rendition of “Higher Than the Sun” by Primal Scream, performed live for the BBC program “In the Company Of” back in August 2007. True, we’re dealing with a classic here, Screamadelica being a groundbreaking album (that I love), but props to Natasha Khan’s vocals (with slivers of Regan’s voice echoing in the backround) for taking a trippy acid house track and making it so emotive and moving…my heart melts a little every time I hear it. This makes my top 25 all-time.

Bonus track – “Loaded” remixed by Terry Farley (one of the producers of Screamadelica). Man, I love this version..makes me want to go pub hopping in Scotland.

Sinead O’Connor Reissue

21 04 2009

I tend to steer clear of reissues, leaving them for the completists out there, because who needs more of the same with fancier packaging? I will, however, be getting my hands on the special edition of Sinead O’Connor’s classic I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got because it includes a second disc of B-Sides/live cuts (including a fab live version of “Troy”), two previously unreleased tracks, and because yes, I think her music’s awesome. The LP is out today from Capitol/EMI, check out the tracklist here.

Just another reason to watch this video again..which I admit, is still capable of making me cry.

The Big Pink

20 04 2009

Is this the year early 90s-inspired surpasses 80s-inspired as my musical era of choice? ..gasp.. The Big Pink‘s euphoric second single “Velvet” hits the shelves today via 4AD. Stronger vocals and a pulsing beat add some more gravity to the track versus their previous single “Too Young To Love”, but the heart of it all, the melodic reverb, is left intact. Watch for their debut full-length release later this year.

Swoontastic

Swan Lake is the collaboration of Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown), Dan Bejar (Destroyer, The New Pornographers), and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes). Their second album Enemy Mine (named after this sci-fi flick) came out in March (via Jagjaguwar). Showcasing three distinct artists, the album’s a bit all over the place – sometimes poignant, sometimes exhausting – but worth a listen overall. Krug’s tracks (“Paper Lace”/”Settle On Your Skin”/”A Hand at Dusk”) are the highlight for me…classic poetic/obtuse indie fare, dripping with romance. His songs bring me back to my college days when I would spend my time analyzing cryptic indie song lyrics instead of studying..”Pink Bullets” comes to mind..ahh to be young again.

I love love love this song. “What’s in the world? What’s in the hearts of pretty girls?”

Sweet Instrumentals

8 04 2009

Not sure I like their name, but the music is swell, with classical elements and a bit of a cinematic flair. Balmorhea (pronounced bal-more-ay) is an Austin-based 6-piece..their new release All Is Wild, All Is Silent is out now via Western Vinyl.

Planning my escape

17 03 2009

I watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona again the other day, and I’m back in daydream mode. This song by Canadian artist Sarah Burton fits right in with the movie. And with that, I’m off to a bar called O’Malley’s…Happy St. Patty’s Day!
